“The BÆR-VAULT is genius - three cards, no wallet, and it's the warmest fleece I've ever owned.”
- Dwayne R., USA
You start the climb in sheltered woods and feel fine. Ten minutes later you step onto the ridgeline, and the wind cuts straight through your fleece. As one alpine hiker put it: "A fleece on its own isn't very useful in these places, as the wind cuts right through." So you pull on your rain shell, and then you overheat on the next push uphill. "I'm too hot, so I unzip the chest a bit."
Most fleece is "thin, pilled and wind-leaky." Most midlayers also bobble under pack straps and ride up the moment you reach for a handhold. That's why the Hoodie 5.0 uses 340gsm bonded BÆRSkin MicroFleece with thinner-than-silk fibers. It holds heat when the wind picks up, and its anti-pill finish is built to resist the surface wear a loaded pack causes.
Every other hoodie gives you two hand pockets. The all-new BÆRSkin Hoodie 5.0 was built with a 11-pocket system where every pocket has a job - and everything you carry has a home.
Feel the warmth of 340gsm bonded anti-pill BÆRSkin™ MicroFleece that's 20% lighter and 50% warmer than your standard 270gsm fleeces.
Block the rain by instantly zipping on the 20,000mm rated Waterproof Rain Jacket onto the hoodie to keep dry in heavy storms.
Keep stuff secure with 9 pockets, plus 2 new mesh inserts - the BÆR-VAULT™ RFID Pocket protects your cards behind a metalized RFID-blocking lining, with its own interior PocketWallet.
Every pocket on the BÆRSkin Hoodie 5.0 either zips shut or holds firm. Your phone won't swing loose, your card won't drop out on a rocky scramble, and you won't have to take your pack off just to grab a snack.
The BÆR-VAULT™ RFID Pocket sits inside your left waist, lined with RFID-blocking material and fitted with a PocketWallet for your ID, cards and a folded note. You can leave the bulky wallet in the car at the trailhead.
Wind is what turns a cool hike into a cold one. Regular fleece insulates, but it doesn't stop the gusts.
Our 340gsm bonded BÆRSkin MicroFleece™ evaporates moisture faster and breathes better than regular fleece, so it works with your effort on the climb. It absorbs less than 1% of its weight in water and dries quickly.
Proven to keep you warm in -1°C or 30°F temperatures.
The Hoodie 5.0 isn't waterproof on its own. When the forecast turns to sustained rain or snow, zip it into the Heavy-Storm Rain Jacket (sold separately) and your fleece becomes the lining. You can also wear the shell alone for a warm, wet climb, or wear the fleece alone on a dry, windy ridge. That gives you three layering options in one system.
At 20,000mm hydrostatic head, the Heavy-Storm Rain Jacket handles heavy, sustained rain and snow while staying breathable. It's built from 100% Polyester Ripstop that resists tears on rocky scrambles, with a PFAS-free, SGS-tested BÆR-Tex DWR coating. When the sky clears, it packs into its own pocket at 350 grams and 3 x 4.2 inches.
Most midlayers fail the first time you move. Hikers describe one that "rides up as soon as I do any sort of movement," or that fits in the shoulders but "leaves a ton of room in the torso." The Hoodie 5.0 is cut with broad shoulders, a tapered waist, fitted arms and a longer back, so you stay covered when you bend, reach and scramble.
The adjustable waist reduces ride-up and extra space around the torso. Both the hoodie and the Heavy-Storm Rain Jacket are designed to layer cleanly over a baselayer or under a hat.
A good hiking midlayer fits snugly without restricting you. It should sit square across the shoulders and not hang baggy at the waist or arms. Find your ideal size by measuring your chest. The Heavy-Storm Rain Jacket is already cut to fit over the hoodie, so order your normal size in both.

It is the internal zip pocket on the left-hand waist of your BÆRSkin Hoodie 5.0, just above the hem, and the entire pocket panel is lined with metalized RFID-blocking material. Contactless bank cards, ID cards, hotel keycards and e-passports all communicate by radio. Inside the BÆR-VAULT that signal is blocked, so nothing can be read until you take it out. Inside the BÆR-VAULT you will also find the integrated PocketWallet.
Adjust your fit to block wind with eazi-grip elastic waist toggles, a fully adjustable 3-panel hood, and premium rubber velcro cuffs on the wrist.
